The Story between me and Little Half

I used to be a person with low self-esteem and did not have a clear direction about what I like to do until I reached my early twenties. I finished a Bachelor in Mathematics in City University of Hong Kong and worked as a business analyst in finance for several years. During my years of working, I was equipped with better logical thinking, problem solving and communication skills but I always questioned myself on what I would love to do for the rest of my life.

I recalled that I always enjoyed art lessons when I was a student, so I picked up the childhood interest again. That was how my passion for art started to grow.

In 2014, I completed a Diploma in Illustration, and in the same year, I created the character, ‘Little Half’.

Little Half tells my story. She is a shy and timid girl, who learns to embrace her fears and accepts her imperfections while working to become courageous and comfortable with herself.

One of the highlights of my illustration career came in 2015 during the graduation show of my diploma course. When I displayed a series of watercolor paintings telling the story of Little Half, a family of three who came to see the paintings shared their story with me. The mother, pointing to her 6-year-old daughter, said her daughter was also very shy.

The little girl, seeing herself in Little Half, started to shed tears. She did not say a word. Touched by the girl’s tears, that moment created a deep realization in me. I realized the true meaning and purpose of making illustrations is to tell stories that create a connection with people.

In 2016, I made a decision to leave my job as a business analyst to become a freelance illustrator. This moment marks my devotion to full-time illustration. Throughout these years, I have been growing together with Little Half and creating a lot of connections with different people.
